LEAGUE SHOW UPBEAT
Time to lighten up. Goaded by wintry weather and the frigid economy, the Worthington Area Art League puts a positive spin on life with “Sunny Side Up” at High Road Gallery. Justin Kronewetter, an Ohio Wesleyan University professor, judged the 160-plus pieces and awarded best of show to Dennis Zimmerman’s The Painter, a well-crafted watercolor. Other awards are listed at www.artinview.com. Some imaginary awards might reflect the upbeat theme of the exhibit: • “Less Is More”: Inner Glow, a single pink rose deftly illuminated and photographed by Joseph Wagenhals; and Summer No. 2, a watercolor of a quiet wooded scene painted in a seemingly effortless manner by John Behling. • “Wishful Thinking”: Red Alert, a portrait of half a bright-red watermelon by Susan Clem. • “It’ll Get Warmer”: Nest by Ana Marie Atwood and Reflective by Aida Garrity, a pair of nudes painted in differing but attractive styles. • “Love Those Landscapes”: Golden River by Gloria Woods and Evening Serenade by Richard Clem, two minimalist scenes that maximize the essences of light and color. • “Just for Fun”: Have Sight of Proteus Rising From the Sea, a richly textured painting of a turtle.

It's stunning and incredible when one looks at the enlarged view and examines the seeds and flesh and little depressions. You managed to suggest the outside of the watermelon with that wonderful green. I think it's a great painting. m
